HD-50 Special Election: Jade Chang Sheppard

In keeping up with our HD-50 special election information, we are posting snapshots of the 4 candidates information and policy issues.

Jade Chang Sheppard (D)

  • Sheppard is a UT alum, creator and CEO of Gideon Contracting, and a licensed real estate agent in Austin.
  • Sheppard does not have prior political experience, but her company Gideon Contracting specializes in military contract work and constructs, renovates and repairs federal government facilities.
  • Sheppard is currently on the board of Planned Parenthood and is active in the Austin Children’s Shelter, Texas Lyceum, Austin Chamber of Commerce, and the Asian American Resource Center.
  • Sheppard’s core issues emphasize women’s rights and healthcare, public and higher education affordability, Medicaid, upgrading transportation infrastructure, and government transparency.
  • Sheppard believes decreasing dependence on testing and increasing funding for schools and transportation infrastructure can be solved by getting rid of corporate tax loopholes.
  • When asked about the first bill she would file, Sheppard responded: “[A bill to] fix the problem of women continuing to be paid less than comparably qualified men.” Sheppard believes having a law to allow women to fight this in a state court, not just federal, is important.
