HD-50 Special Election: Celia Israel

In keeping up with our HD-50 special election information, we are posting snapshots of the 4 candidates information and policy issues.

  • Israel is a UT alum, local political activist and real estate agent.
  • Her former political experience includes working as an aide to former Governor Ann Richards. She lost a former campaign in 2004 running for 1st Precinct Travis County Commissioner.
  • In the past, Israel has worked on the Boards of many Austin organizations including GENAustin, YWCA of Austin, Austin Women’s Political Caucus, and the City of Austin 2012 Bond Advisory Committee to name a few. Currently, Israel is Secretary of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Board Member for the Alliance for Public Transportation, and Treasurer of the Stonewall Democrats of Austin.
  • Israel cites 4 core issues: Supporting higher education, expanding healthcare, ending discriminatory practices (defending the vote), and expanding our thinking on environment and energy.
  • In order to accomplish her goals, Israel proposes to restore funding cuts to public education, educate district residents about their current healthcare options, and improve transportation by serving on the House Transportation Committee.
  • When asked about the first bill she would file, Israel responded: “A bill that would allow for online voter registration.” Former representative Mark Strama authored this bill, and Israel believes this bill is critical to ensuring every citizen is able to register and vote.
