UT Votes students hosted the first ever Parties for the People: Undecided Voter Fair on the West Mall October 29, 2014. The event acted as partial completion of our Harvard National Campaign project. The idea came from chapter member's experience with voter registration tabling and talking with other students - it seemed that many UT students said they were already registered to vote, but upon further questioning felt that they did not have the knowledge to make an informed voting decision.
The Parties for the People event invited other partisan student organizations to come together and provide a one-stop space to learn about the candidates on the ballot. Student representatives from University Democrats, College Republicans, and Young Americans for Liberty all tabled together throughout the afternoon - promoting civil discourse and improving organizational relationships for all! Attending students were given a mock ballot and encouraged to ask the representatives questions about their candidates and the political process.
We also had help from Project Vote Smart's Vote Easy quiz - students were able to take the quiz using laptops and learn which state Senate or House candidate most matched their own beliefs. Additionally, we passed out close to 300 nonpartisan League of Women Voters voter guides.
